a two day course to master core skills
A beautifully pleated lampshade is gloriously smart - and we think it offers the most impact of all when lit. Pleated shades are coming right back into fashion, with a new bold twist of colours and shapes.
This two-day class will teach you the basic principal behind all pleated shades, and you will learn by making super-precise knife pleats. The class includes hand stitching the pleats and fitting a classic pleated lining. The course is suitable for beginners and professional soft furnishers.
about the course
The class concentrates on the main skills of making pleated lampshades to a professional standard: measuring, folding and pinning accurate pleats; making a classic informal pleated lining; and hand-sewing it all into place on a drum-shaped frame.
Our expert and friendly tutors will break the process into easy stages and encourage you to consider your own creative style and ideas. It’s suitable for everyone from beginners to professional soft furnishers.
I thoroughly enjoyed this course... the precision really suits me! The tutors were friendly and patient, and I was thrilled with my finished shade. Thank you Lampshade School x

Tea, coffee and cake... all day
While we have all the equipment you need, we find that students like to bring their own scissors, haberdashery kit and even their sewing machine. With current Covid rules, this is preferable.
what' to bring
1m standard width top fabric.
For a pleated lampshade we like to recommend cotton lawn, silk doupion, which are classic choices.
Whatever you choose, your fabric should be light weight and hold a pleat well. Avoid anything bulky or stretchy. If in doubt, bring a choice.
Students are welcome to arrive from 9am. The coffee pot will already be on.
Lessons begin at 9.30am and we'll continue until 5pm. We take a 30 minute lunch break as we find that most students are keen to crack on. The workroom has its own kitchen and social space so that you can take the day at your own pace.
