FAN PLEATED LAMPSHADES
an advanced pleating technique
Back in fashion – brought bang up to date with fresh bold colour choices. Traditional technique… very contemporary in style. This masterclass takes pleats to a new level.
about the course
Fan pleating is a satisfyingly exact way of arranging fabrics to create sunrays of light and colour where the overlapping layers coincide. Traditionally made in quiet shades of cream and gold, fresh bold colour and fabric choices bring fan pleated lampshade style bang up to date.
Students will work on a Milano drum, which is an ideal shape for learning the technique. Two colours of fabric will be used to create the pleated fans. Students will learn to: bid the frame; plan, fold, pin and sew the fabric to the frame; line the shade; and create a class and incredibly useful bias trimming to finish off.
Whatever your experience, creativity and experimentation will be actively encouraged.
Suitable for all levels, but sewing skills are preferable.
Students are provided with a 10in or 12in Milano drum shade. Also included are: cotton binding tape, ivory or white lining fabric, specialist sewing threads and needles.
We have all the haberdashery equipment required, but we find that most students would rather use their own favourite scissors.
We will keep your creativity fuelled with plenty of tea, coffee and homemade cake.
what' to bring
Two half-metre pieces of lightweight-weight cotton lawn or cotton muslin fabric, or similar, for your top cover. Silk chiffon also works well.
A packed lunch.
Students are welcome to arrive from 9am. The coffee pot will already be on.
Lessons begin at 9.30am and we'll continue until 5pm. We take a 30 minute lunch break as we find that most students are keen to crack on. The workroom has its own kitchen and social space so that you can take the day at your own pace.
